Robin Wallace, PhD

Robin Wallace is a graduate of Oberlin College and received Master's and Doctoral degrees from Yale University. He is an internationally recognized Beethoven scholar; his groundbreaking book Beethoven's Critics: Aesthetic Dilemmas and Resolutions During the Composer's Lifetime (Cambridge University Press) received critical acclaim, as did Hearing Beethoven: A Story of Musical Loss and Discovery (University of Chicago Press), an in-depth study of Beethoven's deafness and how it affected his creative process. His edited volume Setting the Record Straight: Essays on Music in Honor of Linda Shaver-Gleason (Clemson University Press) is a tribute to a prominent public musicologist who died tragically young.

Dr. Wallace is also the author of the music appreciation textbook Take Note: An Introduction to Music Through Active Listening (Oxford University Press), and two volumes of translations of contemporary reviews of Beethoven (University of Nebraska Press). His translations also appear online at the website of the Boston University Center for Beethoven Research. His articles and reviews have appeared in Music and Letters, The Journal of Musicology, The Journal of Musicological Research, Beethoven Forum, The Beethoven Journal, The Journal of Music History Pedagogy, BBC Music Magazine, Integrité and online at The Avid Listener, and Zocalo Public Square. He has recorded podcasts with Ideas Roadshow and New Books Network. He has also published numerous book chapters.

At Baylor, Dr. Wallace taught courses on music history to undergraduates and graduate students and music appreciation to non-majors. He also taught in the Baylor Interdisciplinary Core, whose graduates fondly recall his annual performance of John Cage's 4'33", even if they don't remember a note of the music.
