The Baylor Wind Ensemble is the premier wind band of the Baylor University School of Music and has been praised as “one of the flagship programs in the nation.” Performances at previous state and national conferences in the country were characterized as “nothing short of spectacular” and “representing the best in wind band performance.”
In more than five decades of existence, the Baylor Wind Ensemble is guided by a philosophy that seeks to educate and expose its students and audiences to the highest quality music written or arranged for wind band representing a diversity of musical styles and historical periods. The highly-acclaimed group has appeared numerous times at regional and national conventions, including those of the American Bandmasters Association, College Band Directors National Association, Texas Music Educators Association, and The Midwest Clinic. The Wind Ensemble has been featured on numerous recordings, particularly highlighting the music of Steven Stucky and Daron Hagen. Additionally, the group has several live compact disc recordings of recent conference performances available through Mark Custom Records. The group’s latest recording project is scheduled for release in early 2024 on the Signum Classics label, featuring collaborations with clarinetist, Julian Bliss, and composers John Mackey and Zhou Tian.
Since 2006, collaborations with numerous composers have provided compelling perspectives and inspiring interactions for Baylor students and faculty. These composers include Michael Colgrass, William Bolcom, David Maslanka, Donald Grantham, Frank Ticheli, Michael Daugherty, Scott Lindroth, Adam Schoenberg, James Syler, Mark Kilstofte, Christopher Theofanidis, Scott McAllister, Charles Rochester Young, Luis Serrano Alarcón, Chang Su Koh, Ryan Lindveit, Ola Gjeilo, Carter Pann, Steven Bryant, John Mackey, Joel Puckett, Omar Thomas, Steve Danyew, Susan Botti, Zhou Tian, Viet Cuong, and Paul Dooley. Additionally, the Baylor Wind Ensemble has welcomed distinguished guest conductors and performers such as H. Robert Reynolds, Richard Floyd, Allan McMurray, Tom Lee, Gary Green, John Whitwell, Michael Haithcock, Kevin Sedatole, Larry Combs, Joseph Alessi, Julian Bliss, the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, in addition to several current and former Baylor faculty.
Graduates of the Baylor Wind Ensemble hold distinguished teaching positions at the elementary, secondary, and collegiate levels. Furthermore, former members of the group have secured appointments in orchestras around the world, as well as in leading military bands of the armed services.
