Timothy McKinney, PhD

Timothy McKinney, Professor of Music Theory and Associate Dean for Graduate Studies, came to Baylor in 2002 from the University of Texas at Arlington, where he was Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Liberal Arts. He earned degrees from the University of North Texas (PhD), Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary (MM), and William Jewell College (BS). His research interests include text/music relationships, the history of music theory, and musical form. He has read papers for the Society for Music Theory, the American Musicological Society, and many other national/international conferences. His publications include the book Adrian Willaert and the Theory of Interval Affect: The Musica nova Madrigals and the Novel Theories of Zarlino and Vicentino and articles and reviews in Musical Quarterly, Early Music, Music Theory Spectrum, Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Theoria, and other journals and edited volumes.  Recently appearing work includes the critical edition Girolamo Parabosco: Madrigali a cinque voci (Venice, 1546), published by A-R Editions in 2022, and “Zarlino’s Aesthetics in Le istitutioni harmoniche” in the volumeMusico Perfetto, Gioseffo Zarlino:  His Time, His Work, His Influence (Venice, 2022).  He serves on the editorial board of Theoria and is a former president of the Texas Society for Music Theory. He received Baylor’s Outstanding Professor for Significant Contributions to the Academic Community award in 2013, and in 2014-2015 served as Interim Dean of the School of Music.
