Baylor's Wind Ensemble in Concert

November 5, 2021

The Baylor University Wind Ensemble will present its third concert of the 2021-2022 season on Thursday, November 18, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall, located within the Glennis McCrary Music Building. The conductor of this fine, 79-member ensemble of woodwinds, brass, and percussion is Baylor’s Director of Bands, J. Eric Wilson.
To open the program, graduate conductor Ceon Rumphs will lead a performance of American composer Vincent Persichetti’s Divertimento for Band, Op. 42. During the course of overlapping tenures, Persichetti served as head of the composition department at the Philadelphia Conservatory for twenty years and taught at the Juilliard School of Music for more than forty years. Divertimento for Band was Persichetti’s first major work for band and remains, to this day, one of his most popular compositions. Comprised of six short movements (“Prologue,” “Song,” “Dance,” “Burlesque,” “Soliloquy,” and “March”), Divertimento for Band was commissioned by the Goldman Band, which premiered it on June 16, 1950.
The Baylor University Wind Ensemble will conclude its program with American composer David Maslanka’s Symphony No. 4. Dating from the year 1993, this poignant work makes powerful use of several hymn tunes, including “Old Hundred” (“The Doxology” or “Praise God from Whom all Blessings Flow”), the Bach chorales “Only Trust in God to Guide You” and “Christ Who Makes Us Holy,” and some original melodies that are hymn-like in nature.
This Wind Ensemble concert is free of charge and open to the public. It is also available for livestreaming at baylor.edu/music/live.
