Baylor's Campus Orchestra (and Friends) in Concert

The Baylor University Campus Orchestra, augmented by thirteen woodwind, brass, and string players from the Baylor Symphony Orchestra, will present a concert on Monday, February 28, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall, located within the Glennis McCrary Music Building. The conductor is Baylor University’s Director of Orchestral Activities, Stephen Heyde.
The Campus Orchestra is comprised of thirty-one talented string students whose majors range across virtually every discipline that the university offers. Their Monday night concert will feature three contrasting movements from the symphonies of English composer Benjamin Britten, Austrian composer Franz Schubert, and German composer Felix Mendelssohn.
Opening the program will be the third movement, “Sentimental Sarabande,” from Britten’s Simple Symphony, Op. 4, from 1934. On the podium for this piece will be graduate conductor K. Trey Thompson from Haslet, Texas.
Next, the Campus Orchestra will play the first movement, “Allegro moderato,” from Schubert’s Symphony No. 8 in B minor, D. 759, popularly known as the “Unfinished Symphony.” Schubert began work on this symphony in 1822 but ultimately left it incomplete after the second movement, despite the fact that he lived for another six years.
The program will close with the first movement, “Allegro,” of Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No. 2 in D major, MWV N2, from 1821, written when the precocious composer was just twelve years old. In all, Mendelssohn wrote thirteen string symphonies between the ages of twelve and fourteen.
