An Exploration of Gustav Mahler's "Rückert Lieder" on Baylor's Lyceum Series

January 26, 2022

Arved Ashby, Professor of Music and Chair of the Department of Musicology at The Ohio State University, will present a Lyceum Series lecture entitled "Mahler’s Ravishing Reply to Lyric Poetry: The Rückert Lieder" on Monday, January 31, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Meadows Recital Hall, located within the Glennis McCrary Music Building.
Along with his commentary will be performances of all five songs from Gustav Mahler's collection, set to the words of German poet Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866) and premiered in 1905. They will be sung by soprano Kimberly Monzón, Assistant Professor of Voice at Baylor University, and accompanied by pianist Jiung Yoon.
Dr. Arved Ashby is regarded as a leading authority on the life and music of Austrian composer Gustav Mahler (1860-1911). He is now working on an extended study of the epistemic reasons for “difference” in Mahler’s music (Mahler, Anti-Philology). This study attempts to explain how Mahler's epistemic challenges, his redefinition of basic boundaries, reach well beyond musical issues as usually defined.
Dr. Kimberly Monzón has recently performed such roles as Susanna in Le nozze di Figaro, Magda in La rondine, and as the soprano soloist in Carmina Burana. She also sang the title role in the world premiere of Ramala by Charles Wakefield Cadman.
Dr. Jiung Yoon is in high demand as a soloist, collaborative pianist, and teacher in central Ohio. He is often invited to collaborate on The Ohio State University faculty solo recitals, and he has worked as a professional accompanist for hundreds of concerts and international music festivals and competitions in Korea, the United States, and Europe.
Baylor University's Lyceum Series, funded by the Meadows Foundation of Dallas, is free of charge and open to the public.
