Hub New Music on the Distinguished Artist Series

The Boston-based quartet Hub New Music will present the next concert on Baylor University’s Distinguished Artist Series on Tuesday, February 1, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Roxy Grove Hall. Hailed as “contemporary chamber trailblazers” by the Boston Globe, Hub New Music is composed of flutist Michael Avitabile, clarinetist Nicholas Brown, violinist Alyssa Wang, and cellist Jesse Christeson.
Their Baylor program will open with Christopher Cerrone’s New Addresses from 2020. Its three movements are based on poetry by Kenneth Koch. Each of the three interconnected movements, “To Breath,” “To My Heart at the Close of Day,” and “To Yes,” is inspired by one of the poems from this collection.
Next to be heard is Wavelengths, written in 2019 by Japanese-born American composer Takuma Itoh. Since 2012, Itoh has been teaching at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa, where he serves as an Associate Professor of Music.
Puerto Rican composer Christian Quiñones wrote Agreeable Gray last year. During a lengthy session of apartment-hunting, he discovered that there is a color called “Agreeable Gray” in the realty industry, identified as one of the most compelling colors to rent or sell properties.
Du Yun, who was born and raised in Shanghai, China, in 1977, currently resides in New York City, where she works as a composer, multi-instrumentalist, performance artist, activist, and curator for new music. Yun composed her dreams-bend in 2007.
Eric Nathan’s Missing Words VI dates from last year. It forms part of a larger series of works that was written in homage to the newly-created German words presented in Ben Schott’s book, Schottenfreude: German Words for the Human Condition. These Jerry Seinfeldian words illuminate everyday experiences for which English has no synonyms.
