Soprano Amy Petrongelli in Baylor Faculty Recital

Soprano Amy Petrongelli, Assistant Professor of Voice at Baylor University, will present a faculty recital on Sunday, February 20, beginning at 5:00 p.m. in Roxy Grove Hall. Joining her on the program will be collaborative pianist Blair Salter of Penn State University, who serves as the assistant chorusmaster at Santa Fe Opera.
Dr. Petrongelli is the vocalist and co-artistic director of the Khemia Ensemble, a group devoted to reflecting diverse perspectives in contemporary classical chamber music. She also serves as the director of the Collaborative Piano Institute Vocal Academy summer program. Dr. Salter is the creator of the aria database Voce Moderna and has played for numerous opera workshops and world premieres.
The Baylor program will open with Night Dances, a collection of six songs on the words of poets Elizabeth Bishop, Emily Brontë, Emily Dickinson, and Edna St. Vincent Millay. That will be followed by English composer Rebecca Clarke’s “The Seal Man” from 1922, set to a poem of John Masefield.
Also to be heard are English composer Cecilia Livingston’s “Penelope” from 2014, using her own words that were inspired by Homer’s Odyssey, and American composer Ricky Ian Gordon’s “Afternoon on a Hill” from 1995, set to a poem by Edna St. Vincent Millay.
Another setting of words by Edna St. Vincent Millay comes next, “Even in the Moment of Our Earliest Kiss” by Margaret Bonds. Like her, H. Leslie Adams, too, is an African American composer, and the Baylor recital will include his “For You, There Is No Song.”
The program will close with four Lieder by the remarkable German composer (and wife of Robert Schumann), Clara Wieck Schumann.
