A Sunday Night Performance by Baylor's Concert Band

The Baylor University Concert Band, led by its new conductor, Assistant Director of Bands Stuart Ivey, will perform on Sunday, February 27, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Jones Concert Hall, located within the Glennis McCrary Music Building.
Opening the program will be the Kirkpatrick Fanfare of American composer Andrew Boysen, Jr., commissioned by Central Missouri State University for the dedication of CMSU’s James C. Kirkpatrick Library in March 1999. This work has a definite Irish flavor, including a strain of “Londonderry Air” (“Danny Boy”).
Next, the 98-member Concert Band will present Dancing at Stonehenge by American composer Anthony Suter, who currently serves on the faculty at the University of Redlands in California. Dating from 2007, this piece contains touches of Brazilian music, American jazz, and Renaissance music. Ceon Rumphs, a graduate student from Garland, will conduct.
Also to be heard are the five-movement Symphonic Suite from 1957 by American composer Clifton Williams and Lasting Light from 2018 by Vietnamese-American composer Viet Cuong. According to Dr. Viet, this latter work was inspired by a trip to the Grand Canyon and the “lingering light” that existed in the moment just after sunset, followed by the light of the stars and eventually the rising sun.
Ben Gerrard, a graduate student from Orlando, Florida, will conduct John Philip Sousa’s The Dauntless Battalion, a march from 1922. Sousa composed when he and future President Warren G. Harding were awarded honorary doctorate by the Pennsylvania Military College.
The program will close with Conga del Fuego Nuevo (“Conga of New Fire”) from 2005 by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez, as transcribed from orchestra to band six years later by Oliver Nickel. Conga del Fuego Nuevo is an up-tempo, celebratory piece that is bright and catchy.
