Chamber Singers and A Cappella Choir

The Baylor University A Cappella Choir and Chamber Singers will stream their spring concert on Thursday, April 22, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Both choral ensembles are conducted by Associate Professor of Choral Music Brian A. Schmidt, and the choirs’ pianist is Joseph Li, Assistant Professor of Vocal Coaching.
The 20-voice Chamber Singers will open their portion of the concert with “Cry Out and Shout” by the long-lived Norwegian composer, Knut Nystedt. Then they will sing “Lead Me, Lord” by English composer Will Todd.
Two pieces by English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams will be heard: his “O Taste and See” and “No Sad Thought His Soul Affright (from the 1954 cantata Hodie).
Next will be three choral pieces by German master Johannes Brahms: “O schöne Nacht,” Op. 92, No. 1, “Spätherbst,” Op. 92, No. 2, and “Der Gang sum Liebchen,” Op. 31, No. 3.
The Chamber Singers will close with a setting of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s poem “How Do I Love Thee?” by American composer Eric Nelson.
The 42-voice A Cappella Choir will sing “At the Round Earth’s Imagined Corners” by American composer Williametta Spencer, as led by assistant conductor Alex Gerleman, a graduate student from Marion, Iowa
Dr. Schmidt will conduct the balance of the program, which includes three excerpts from Sügismaastikud (Autumn Landscapes) by Estonian composer Veljo Tormis, “The Silver Swan” by American composer Adolphus Hailstork, and “Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal” by American composer Edward Margetson.
Venezuelan composer Antonio Estévez’s “Mata del Ánima Sola” (Tree of the Lonely Soul) will come next, followed by “God Be in My Head” by a Baylor alumnus, composer Jordan Tucker.
