Baylor School of Music Names Kirsten Chambers, MM, BM, Assistant Professor of Voice
The Baylor University School of Music is pleased to announce the appointment of Kirsten Chambers, MM, BM, as Assistant Professor of Voice, effective August 1, 2026.
An internationally recognized soprano and versatile singing actress, Chambers brings a distinguished performance career and a deep commitment to teaching and mentorship to the Baylor community. Her work spans German repertoire, contemporary music, and rarely performed works, with a reputation for stepping into demanding roles with clarity, preparation, and artistry.
Chambers began her career as a dramatic coloratura soprano specializing in Mozart and now performs leading Strauss and Wagner roles as a dramatic soprano. She has appeared with major opera companies across the United States, including the Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, San Diego Opera, Arizona Opera, and Florida Grand Opera, among many others. Her international engagements include performances at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Hong Kong Arts Festival, Opera Hong Kong, and Opéra de Rennes.
Her portrayal of Strauss and Wagner heroines has been a defining part of her career, including performances of the title role in Salome at the Metropolitan Opera, Opera Hong Kong, Florida Grand Opera, and San Diego Opera. She made her Carnegie Hall debut singing Maria in Strauss’ Friedenstag with the American Symphony Orchestra and has performed as a soloist with orchestras and festivals across the United States and internationally.
A champion of new music, Chambers has premiered works with American Lyric Theater, American Opera Projects, Center City Theater, and White Snake Projects, and has recorded for labels including Newport Classics and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project. Her work reflects both a commitment to expanding the repertoire and a willingness to engage deeply with contemporary voices in the field.
At the center of Chambers’ work is a holistic approach to teaching that integrates vocal technique, artistic identity, and long-term vocal health. She emphasizes alignment, breath efficiency, and resonant phonation, while guiding students toward a deeper understanding of their voice and its expressive possibilities. Her teaching is grounded in helping singers develop independence, self-awareness, and the ability to connect technical work to meaningful artistic choices.
Chambers is particularly passionate about creating environments where students can take risks, grow with confidence, and discover new capabilities in their voices. Her approach encourages singers to think as complete musicians, engaging both the physical and expressive dimensions of performance.
Drawn to Baylor’s strong sense of community and its commitment to a Christ-centered education, Chambers sees her appointment as both a professional and personal calling. She is especially interested in preparing students for the demands of a modern singing career, including developing versatility across styles, building connections with contemporary composers, and creating performance opportunities that integrate artistry and faith.
“I am honored to accept this appointment and to join a community committed to excellence, artistry, and faith,” Chambers said. “I look forward to investing in the next generation of singers while continuing to grow as both an educator and performer. It is a privilege to become part of Baylor’s School of Music.”
Chambers holds a Master of Music in Vocal Performance, magna cum laude, from the University of Houston and a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, magna cum laude, from Illinois Wesleyan University.
