The Baylor University School of Music mourns the passing of Dr. Donald L. Bailey, former Director of Choral Activities, who went to be with his Lord and Savior on April 3, 2026.

Dr. Bailey served Baylor School of Music from 1993 until his retirement in 2008 and left a lasting imprint on Baylor and the broader choral field. A distinguished conductor, educator, and composer, his ensembles, including the A Cappella Choir and Chamber Singers, were invited to perform at national conventions of the American Choral Directors Association, multiple Texas Music Educators Association conferences, and other major gatherings across the country.

Throughout his career, Dr. Bailey held leadership positions at Arizona State University, Texas Tech University, Houghton College, and Eastern New Mexico University. He received teaching excellence awards at several institutions and was widely respected for his work as an educator and mentor.

His compositions, published through Alliance Music Publications and Gentry Publications, continue to be performed by choirs across the country. He was also recognized with the Texas Choirmaster Award from the Texas Choral Directors Association, one of the highest honors in the field.

Those who knew Dr. Bailey understood that his greatest impact was found in the lives of his students. He was known for his care, his discipline, and his commitment to developing musicians of character and conviction. His legacy continues through the many educators and musicians he taught.

Dr. Bailey lived a life of faith and saw music as a means of glorifying God and shaping lives. His influence remains a meaningful part of the Baylor community and the broader world of choral music.

The Baylor School of Music gives thanks for his life and honors the legacy he leaves behind.
