Gabriel Piqué, DMA

  • Assistant Professor of Saxophone

Gabriel Piqué is the Assistant Professor of Saxophone at Baylor University. His technical and musical expertise has earned praise for a “gorgeous sound . . . with sensitive phrasing” (Bachtrack.com). As an educator, Pique prides himself on creative problem-solving in “a welcoming studio . . . with honest communication and a dash of humor” (Sophomore, B.M. Performance).

As a soloist and active performer, Piqué has presented concerts all over the world, including Las Vegas, Zagreb, Moscow, Strasbourg, Beijing, Las Palmas, and Bangkok. He has been named first prize winner in numerous competitions including the North American Saxophone Alliance Solo Competition, The Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, and The Plowman Chamber Music Competition. He performs regularly with The Cleveland Orchestra and is the alto saxophonist in The Moanin’ Frogs sextet.

Piqué's primary classical teachers have included Debra Richtmeyer, Chien-Kwan Lin and Connie Frigo. He also studied jazz saxophone with Dave D’Angelo of the Buddy Rich Orchestra and Ron Bridgewater of the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Jazz Orchestra. He holds degrees from the University of Georgia, the Eastman School of Music, and the University of Illinois.

Among his numerous academic and merit-based awards, Piqué has been named a Presser Scholar, a recipient of Eastman’s prestigious performer’s certificate, and a Future of Music Faculty Fellow. He is a Vandoren Artist, Selmer Artist, and Key Leaves Artist.
