Shijun Wang, DMA

Described by the Rhein-Neckar-Zeitung Heidelberger as “a fascinating, serious, and sensitive musician” – is an acclaimed pianist whose artistry has captivated audiences worldwide. As both a solo recitalist and orchestral soloist, he has performed extensively across the United States, including in California, Texas, Pennsylvania, New York, Arizona, Oklahoma, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Florida, Georgia, Utah, Michigan, Idaho, Connecticut, and New Jersey. Internationally, his performances have taken him to Germany, France, Bulgaria, Israel, Poland, Norway, Spain, China, Mexico, South Korea, and Japan.

During his most recent China tour, Professor Wang presented master classes, lectures, and recitals at more than half of the country’s major conservatories, including the Shenyang Conservatory, Xi’an Conservatory, Sichuan Conservatory, and Jilin College of Arts. In 2017, he was appointed Visiting Professor at Xi’an Conservatory, where he returns each summer to give concerts and master classes. His summer teaching engagements also include the Puigcerdà Music Festival (Spain), the East/West International Piano Festival (South Korea), and the Euro Arts Music Festival in Poland. 

His orchestral highlights include Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with the Lafayette Symphony, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra, and performances with the Evening Stars Orchestra, Duxbury Music Festival Orchestra, Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Hebei Symphony Orchestra, Music Academy of the West Orchestra, and Tulsa Signature Symphony Orchestra.

Professor Wang is a laureate of numerous national and international competitions. His honors include the Excellence Award at the 65th Steinway Children and Young Pianist Competition (2002), the Excellence Award at the 8th Ettlingen International Competition for Young Pianists in Germany (2002), the Bronze Medal at the Hong Kong Tchaikovsky Piano Competition (2002), fifth prize at the Hamamatsu Piano Academy (2008), and both First Prize and the Audience Prize at the Crescendo Piano Competition (2010).

Currently Associate Professor of Piano at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, Professor Wang previously taught at Weber State University, where his work included piano performance, music theory, collaborative piano, and chamber music. Born in Shenyang, China, he began piano studies at the age of four and was admitted in 1999 to the Music High School of the Shenyang Conservatory, studying with Professor Dong-Dun Zhang. He earned his Bachelor and Master of Music degrees at The Juilliard School under Oxana Yablonskaya and Joseph Kalichstein, and his Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the Eastman School of Music under Nelita True. His musical mentors also included Thomas Schumacher, Dan-Wen Wei, Alfred Brendel, Emanuel Ax, and Richard Goode.
