Undergraduate Certificates in Music Education

In addition to the degree requirements for the Bachelor of Music Education, students have the opportunity to pursue certificates in areas of extended specialized study. Certificates are optional and offer students the opportunity to choose from a select group of courses focused on helping develop a particular skill or area of expertise. 

Students must have a grade point average minimum of 2.00 ("C") on all courses in the certificate taken at Baylor. Certificates appear on a student's transcript and a hard copy is given to the student signed by the Dean or President. Students interested in pursuing one of the Certificates should contact the School of Music Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. Responsibility for curriculum and degree planning lies with the student, whose advisor, in conjunction with the Music Education Faculty, will provide guidance and advice.

Music Education offers two certificate programs. Those are “Certificate in Music Education Research” and “Certificate in Inclusive Music Education.” Requirements for the certificates are listed below.

Certificate in Music Education Research

Required Courses (3 hours):

• MUS 1330   Introduction to Music Education

Select 6 credit hours from the following:

• MUS 3324 - History of Music before 1600
• MUS 3325 - History of Music 1600-1800
• MUS 3326 - History of Music 1800-WW1
• MUS 3327 - History of Music WW1-Present

Select 3 credit hours from the following:

• MUS 3V9R - Music Research – Literature Review, IRB, and/or Method
• MUS 4V9R - Music Research – Data Collection, Presentation and/or Publication

Certificate in Inclusive Music Education

Required Courses (7 hours):

• MUS 3135 - Inclusive Music Education for Students with Differences and Disabilities

• EDP 2336 - The Developing Child

• EDP 3361 - Developmental Disabilities

Additional Requirements:

• 4 semesters as a student teacher in OsoMusical
