David W. Montgomery, DMA

Associate Professor of Music Education Division Director

Dr. David Montgomery is Associate Professor of Music Education at Baylor University where he joined the faculty in 2018. He teaches courses in music education and observes band student teachers. Prior to his appointment at Baylor, Dr. Montgomery was Associate Director of Bands and Director of the Bronco Marching Band at Western Michigan University. At WMU, he also taught courses in conducting, music education, and directed the University Concert Band. Under his direction, the 320+ member Bronco Marching Band performed in many high-profile venues including the 81st Goodyear Cotton Bowl, ESPN’s College Game Day, and halftime of the NFL’s Detroit Lions. His public school teaching experience includes being Director of Bands at East Gaston High School in Mt. Holly, NC where he built a Grade VI concert band program and an award winning marching band.

Dr. Montgomery is an accomplished teacher and was recognized as the recipient of the Outstanding Faculty Award in Teaching at Baylor. He was also a finalist for the University Distinguished Teaching Award and was recipient of the Dean’s Teaching Award at WMU.

In addition to his teaching duties, Dr. Montgomery’s primary research interests are student leadership and culture building. With more than twenty-five years of experience teaching student leaders at both the high school and college levels, Dr. Montgomery is founder and director of Serviam Leadership Academy and the author of Serviam! The Three Pillars of Student Leadership: Leading, Teaching, Conducting available through GIA Publications. In addition, he has authored numerous articles on leadership and culture building. He gives presentations and workshops across the United States including Texas Music Educators Association, College Band Directors National Association, and The Midwest Clinic. He also serves as an adjudicator and clinician in both concert and marching band settings.
